It is the occupation that together with the characteristic symptoms and the lung changes generally points t o the diagnosis. Silicosis is a typical occupational disease. Pneumoconioses proper arise after the inhalation of in- organic dust, especially silica. The nature of such changes is decided firstly by the physical and chemical composi- tion of the inhaled particles, secondly by the amount of dust and the length of the exposure, and thirdly by individual suscepti- bility.
